Jane Birkin, the British singer and actress who found fame in France, has died aged 76.
The singer and actress died on Sunday, the French Ministry of Culture confirmed in a tweet, calling her a “timeless French-speaking icon.”
Who was Jane Birkin?
Jane Mallory Birkin was born on 14 December 1946, in Marylebone, London. Her mother, Judy Campbell, was an English actress, best known for her work on stage.
Her father, David Birkin, was a Royal Navy lieutenant commander and World War II spy. Her brother is screenwriter and director Andrew Birkin.
Theatre and opera director Sophie Hunter was her niece. Birkin was raised in Chelsea
Birkin attended Miss Ironside’s School in Kensington. She was also educated at Upper Chine School, Isle of Wight. At the age of 17, she met composer John Barry, whom she married in 1965, and had her first daughter, Kate, in 1967.
After Barry left for the United States, the couple divorced in 1968 and Birkin returned to live with her family in London. Birkin began auditioning for film and television roles in England and in Los Angeles
Jane Birkin began appearing in films during the 1960s. She landed the lead role in the 1969 French movie “Slogan” with actor Serge Gainsbourg.
The two would also release a song together from the movie, and would go on to put together several future duets.
Other TV and film credits include “Don Juan, or if Don Juan Were a Woman”, “Je t’aime…moi non plus”, “Death on the Nile”, “Evil Under the Sun”, “Leave All Fair”, “A Soldier’s Daughter Never Cries” and “Elektra”. Birkin also had a successful singing career, with 14 studio albums from 1969 to 2008.
Despite her British roots, the singer became a fashion icon in France in the 1960s and ‘70s, inspiring the creation of one of the most expensive and highly sought-after luxury bags in the world — the Birkin bag by French luxury design house Hermès.

The beloved actress’ cause of death is not yet known but, according to ABC News, the actress has been plagued with health issues in recent years — including a stroke in 2021 and a broken shoulder blade earlier this year — which have kept her from performing and appearing publicly.
