Alistair Darling was a British politician who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer under Prime Minister Gordon Brown from 2007 to 2010.

He was a member of the Labour Party and a member of Parliament for Edinburgh Central and Edinburgh South West from 1987 to 2015. He died on 30 November 2023.

Tributes poured in from across the political divide for a ‘towering figure’ who took ‘calm’ action in steering Britain through the chaos of the global credit crunch.

Alistair Darling died after a short spell in an Edinburgh hospital being treated for cancer, with his family mourning a ‘much-loved husband’ and ‘beloved father’.

A statement issued on behalf of his family said: “The death of Alistair Darling, a former Chancellor of the Exchequer and long-serving member of the Labour cabinet, was announced in Edinburgh today.

“Mr Darling, the much-loved husband of Margaret and beloved father of Calum and Anna, died after a short spell in Western General Hospital under the wonderful care of the cancer team.”

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said he was “deeply saddened” to learn of the news as he led tributes from across the divide today.

He added: “My heart goes out to his family, particularly Maggie, Calum and Anna, whom he loved so dearly.”

PM Rishi Sunak said: “Alistair Darling’s passing is a huge loss to us all. He was a dedicated public servant who served this country though challenging times.

“The role he played during the 2014 Independence referendum was vital in keeping our union together.”

Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves added: “I will miss his advice and his counsel. But, more than anything I will miss his friendship, his kindness and decency, his humour and his warmth.”

Alistair Darling was 70 years old when he died. He was born on 28 November 1953 in Hendon, Middlesex, England to Thomas, and his wife, Anna MacLean.

He was the great-nephew of Sir William Darling, a Conservative/Unionist Member of Parliament for Edinburgh South (1945–1957) who had served as Lord Provost of Edinburgh during the Second World War.

He was educated at Chinthurst School, in Tadworth, Surrey, then in Kirkcaldy, and at the private Loretto School, in Musselburgh.

He attended the University of Aberdeen, from where he graduated as a Bachelor of Laws (LLB). He became the president of Aberdeen University Students’ Representative Council.

Margaret is a former journalist who has worked for the Daily Record, Radio Forth and the Glasgow Herald.

She was born in September 1952, and reportedly took a break from journalism when the Labour Party won the 1997 general election.

In 2010 Vaughan launched a cookery blog to promote Scottish cuisine called Maggie’s Kitchen Menus.

In her first post she wrote: “The gas men are digging holes around the house and the garden looks like a WW1 trench.

“Will have to fall back on all the oven cooking methods learned before the Aga and the house it lived in was sold.”

Later adding: “A quick post for Catherine who wants the sort of roast beef we served at the party last month.

“It’s a sin not to serve it with Yorkshire pudding.”
