Trimmer was born Jon “Jonty” Charles Trimmer on 18 September 1939 in Petone, New Zealand. He started learning ballet at age 12 at his sister’s ballet school.
He had a long and illustrious career that spanned over six decades and involved performing with some of the world’s most famous ballet companies and stars.
He joined the New Zealand Ballet Company in 1958 and became its principal male dancer in 1970.
He danced with the company until 2007, playing a variety of roles such as Petrouchka, Albrecht in Giselle, and Captain Hook in Peter Pan.
He studied and performed in the United Kingdom, Australia, and Denmark from 1959 to 1970.
He toured with the Sadler’s Wells Ballet, danced with The Australian Ballet and the Royal Danish Ballet, and shared the stage with legends like Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev.
He appeared in several films and television shows, such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit trilogy, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, Undercover Gang, and Fireraiser.
He was nominated for the best actor award for his role in Fireraiser in 1986.
He received many honours and awards for his services to ballet, such as the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1974, the Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (KNZM) in 1999, the Scroll of Honour from the Variety Artists Club of New Zealand in 1991, and the Wellingtonian of the Year award in 2009.
On 26 October 2023, Jon Trimmer died at the age of 84. His sister told RNZ he died this morning.
Coral Trimmer said her brother “died with a smile on his face” despite his illness causing him considerable pain. His health had deteriorated quickly in the last week.
“I want to cry, but I am also relieved that he won’t suffer any more. He didn’t once complain.”
