She was born to Aaron Spelling, who worked as a television and film producer, and Candy Spelling. She was raised together with her younger brother, Randy, whom she grew to have so much in common with.
She went to Beverly Hills High School and later to Harvard-Westlake School, an elite private institution. Her father started nurturing her acting skills at a very young age. When she was six years old, he hired an acting coach for her. She eventually started getting guest roles on series such as “The Love Boat,” “T.J. Hooker,” and “Fantasy Island.”
