Thorton spent his childhood playing minor hockey with the St. Thomas Travellers in his hometown.
He skated for the Travelers in “AA” hockey and won an Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) championship in peewee.
He participated in six games with the Junior B St. Thomas Stars of the Ontario Hockey Association during his early years, recording eight points in six games as a 14-year-old.
Thornton joined the Stars full-time the next season and scored 104 points in 50 games as a 15-year-old before being picked second overall in the 1995 OHL Draft by the Sault St. Marie Greyhounds.
