Jacob Rothschild, a British financier, philanthropist and member of the Rothschild banking family, has died. He was 87.
In a statement on Monday, his family called Lord Rothschild “a towering presence in many peoples’ lives”.
His career began at the family bank, NM Rothschild & Sons, before starting his own wealth management fund. He was also known for his philanthropy.
Former Prime Minister Tony Blair paid tribute to his “dear friend” describing him as a “wonderful human being”.
Who was Jacob Rothschild?
Jacob Rothschild, born in England in 1936, started his career at the family bank, NM Rothschild & Sons, in 1963 before going on to co-found J Rothschild Assurance Group, which became today’s London-based wealth manager St James’s Place.
He was involved in many business endeavours, including founding investment trust RIT Capital Partners, which has backed a variety of companies, from hedge funds to clean technology start-ups.
Rothschild was also known for being a long-standing patron of the arts, and was trustee of Britain´s National Gallery between 1985 and 1991.
Ed Vaizey, Britain´s former culture minister, paid tribute to Rothschild on X, describing him as one of the country´s greatest cultural philanthropists.
Waddesdon Manor, an English country estate managed by the Rothschild Foundation, said on social media platform X that it and the foundation were “deeply saddened” by the death, calling Rothschild a “businessman, entrepreneur, philanthropist and cultural leader”.

His family confirmed his death in a statement obtained by the U.K.’s PA Media, according to Bloomberg and Reuters.
“Our father Jacob was a towering presence in many people’s lives, a superbly accomplished financier, a champion of the arts and culture, a devoted public servant, a passionate supporter of charitable causes in Israel and Jewish culture, a keen environmentalist and much-loved friend, father and grandfather,” their statement read.
The family shared that Rothschild “will be buried in accordance with Jewish custom in a small family ceremony and there will be a memorial at a later date to celebrate his life.”
Who was Jacob Rothschild married to?
Rothschild was married to his wife, Serena, for over five decades before her death in 2019. The couple had four kids: Hannah, 61; Beth, 59; Emily, 56; and Nathaniel, 52, per Bloomberg.
Hannah is slated to take over her father’s role as chair of the Rothschild Foundation, the charity confirmed to PA Media.
“Jacob Rothschild was an extraordinary person and his loss will be felt by many,” the foundation said in a statement. “The family is committed to continuing his legacy and the foundation which he loved and endowed.”
