Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO and the 2024 running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), faced a storm of boos and public disapproval after making controversial comments about illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
His remarks suggested that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had urged the NPP government to resort to violence against illegal miners.
During a recent campaign event in Bogoso, a mining town in the Western Region, Dr. Prempeh accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of wanting the NPP government to use violence against illegal miners. He claimed that the NDC suggested the NPP should “shoot and kill” galamseyers.

This statement didn’t sit well with the audience. Many people at the event were frustrated and felt that Dr. Prempeh was making exaggerated claims rather than addressing the real issue.
The NDC has been vocal about needing a strong approach to tackle galamsey, which has severely damaged Ghana’s environment, including water sources and farmland. Dr. Prempeh dismissed these calls as reckless and said that the NPP will not resort to violence.
He stated, “Now that the NDC wants to win power, they are telling the NPP to shoot to kill galamseyers? We will not shoot anyone, neither today nor tomorrow.”
NAPO explained that the NPP’s plan to fight illegal mining involves stricter rules, working with communities, and offering better job options for miners. He believes that using violence would only make the situation worse.

He also accused the NDC of trying to use the issue of galamsey to gain political points in affected areas. Instead, NAPO stressed that the NPP’s focus is on finding solutions that protect the environment and provide legal ways for miners to work.
