Ghanaian musician Shatta Wale had a memorable moment with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during a stakeholder meeting with the creative arts sector.
The event, held in Accra on October 16, 2024, gave Dr. Bawumia a chance to address the concerns of industry members, but it was Shatta Wale’s request that stole the spotlight.
During the question-and-answer session, Shatta Wale asked Dr. Bawumia to respond to his query in Pidgin, saying that it would better resonate with the people on the streets.

“I want to know what you have for our fans out there… and that’s the street… And Your Excellency, I will please plead with you, when you want to respond to what I’m saying, for today and for the people out there on the street, just say it in Pidgin small for me,” Shatta Wale asked.
In a surprising and engaging reply, Dr. Bawumia switched to Pidgin, saying, “Wetin you say?”
He then went on to explain that his heart was with the people of Ghana who are struggling, sharing his own experiences of working on the streets in the past.
“The thing be say me wey I dey politics, the thing wey I dey my heart be the people wey dey suffer for the country. Ibi in dey my heart,” he said in Pidgin, before recalling his time working as a labourer, a cleaner, and even a taxi driver.

Dr. Bawumia also expressed his commitment to helping the less privileged, mentioning his roles as the patron of the Leper’s Council and the Mother Theresa Soup Kitchen, which supports people in need on the streets.
