Captain Smart Fires Back at Obuasi Video Backlash: “I Owe Nobody an Explanation”

Ghanaian media personality, Captain Smart, is once again making headlines—but this time, it’s not for his usual bold commentary on national issues.

The controversy began after an old video resurfaced, sparking a firestorm of reactions following a deadly clash between illegal miners and military personnel at the AngloGold Ashanti mine in Obuasi on January 18, 2025.

The incident, which tragically claimed eight lives, raised questions about the role of media personalities in shaping public opinion—and Captain Smart found himself at the center of it all.

In the now-viral 36-second video, Captain Smart, while hosting a program on Accra-based Onua FM, urged the youth of Obuasi to “invade the pit” and “fight for their livelihoods.”

He even suggested that Ghanaians might one day need to expel AngloGold Ashanti from the country. The video quickly caught fire on social media, with many critics blaming Captain Smart for encouraging unrest among the youth.

But Captain Smart wasn’t about to sit quietly and let the accusations fly. In a direct response, he fired back, making it clear that he wasn’t responsible for the tragic events that unfolded in Obuasi.

He stated: “I don’t owe anybody an explanation, but I just want everyone to know that the video being circulated is an old video. The guys were already working there and entering the pit even in 2023 and 2024. It is an abandoned pit”.

Declaring himself as the best morning show host in the country, Captain Smart added:

“Whoever is pushing anybody to use an old video to come and portray as if Captain Smart made this statement before the incident should know the video was shot in June 2023”.

Meanwhile, President John Mahama has ordered an immediate investigation into the fatal Obuasi clash.

In a statement signed by the acting Spokesperson for the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the government expressed deep regret over the incident and assured the victims that justice would be served.

Additionally, the government has directed AngloGold Ashanti to fully cover the medical expenses of the injured individuals and to assist with burial arrangements for those who lost their lives during the clash.
