Bridget Otoo lashes out at Bawumia’s ‘GH¢2 monthly phones on Credit Promise

Media personality Bridget Otoo has criticized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP flagbearer, for promising to provide smartphones on credit for as little as GH¢2 a month.

It could be recalled that Dr. Bawumia, speaking at a campaign event in the Savannah Region, pledged to make smartphones more accessible to Ghanaians if elected president.

He outlined a plan to collaborate with phone manufacturers to provide smartphones on a credit basis, allowing citizens to pay as little as one or two cedis per month.

“We will make mobile phones accesible, my government will partner with phone manufacturers so that Ghanaians can afford them on credit and pay 1 or 2 cedis every month,” Dr Bawumia announced.

“Access to smartphones is no longer a luxury but a necessity. It opens up opportunities for education, business, and staying connected with loved ones. By making smartphones affordable, we are not only enhancing connectivity but also fostering an environment where every Ghanaian can thrive in the digital age,” Dr Bawumia added.

While the initiative was intended to make technology more accessible, it quickly sparked a range of reactions, both positive and negative, across social media platforms and beyond.

On July 23, 2024, Bridget Otoo took to Twitter to express her disapproval of the plan. In her tweet, Otoo highlighted the impracticality of such a scheme, questioning the feasibility of the payment structure.

She calculated that under the proposed terms, it would take an individual 37 years to fully repay the cost of a smartphone priced at GH¢4,500.

“4500 cedis means it would take 37 years to finish paying. Does it make sense to him?” she tweeted.

Otoo also criticized the plan as disrespectful to voters. She argued that it underestimated their intelligence, saying, “This is not even desperation but just disrespectful to think your voters are stupid.”
