Carey Mulligan was born on May 28, 1985 in London, England to hotel manager Stephen and university lecturer Nano.

There, she attended the International School of Düsseldorf with her brother. The family eventually moved back to the United Kingdom, where Mulligan went to Woldingham School in Surrey as a teenager.
