Burt Young, the veteran character actor best known and Oscar-nominated for his role as Rocky Balboa’s best friend, Paulie, in the Rocky films, has died aged 83.
Young died Oct. 8 in Los Angeles, his daughter, Anne Morea Steingieser, told the New York Times on Wednesday.
Who was Burt Young?
Gerald Tommaso DeLouise, known professionally as Burt Young, was an American actor, author, and painter.
Burt Young has been present in the arts and entertainment industry since 1970, and he is best known for his appearances in the popular Rocky films.
Born in Queens, New York on April 30, 1940, Young’s birth name is Gerald Tommaso DeLouise. He studied at the Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg and currently lives in Port Washington, New York.
Young has been typecast as several different working class Italian-American characters, including Paulie in the Rocky series. His television roles have proven to be of a similar background.
Most recently, he has been working on a short movie project, “Tom In America” (2014).
Along with television and film, Young is also known for his painting and writing, which has brought him international exposure and success.
He has designed several book covers for flourishing writers such as Gabriele Tinti and has also written screenplays and novels.
As for his two best known stage plays, they are “SOS” and “A Letter to Alicia”, among others.
Young had also participated in the 1984 New York City Marathon. He has one daughter, Anne Morea, and was married to his wife, Gloria, until her death in 1974.

Burt Young died Oct. 8 in Los Angeles, his daughter, Anne Morea Steingieser, told the New York Times on Wednesday. No cause was given.
In a statement given to People magazine, Young’s manager, Lynda Bensky, said: “Burt was an actor of tremendous emotional range.
“He could make you cry and he could scare you to death. But the real pathos that I experienced was the poignancy of his soul. That’s where it came from.”
Sylvester Stallone has paid tribute to his “dear friend” and Rocky co-star Burt Young following his death aged 83.
Remembering his pal, Stallone posted a black-and-white snap with Burt Young on set of the boxing film franchise to his Instagram.
Writing alongside the tribute, he shared: “To my dear friend, Burt Young, you were an incredible man and artist, I and the world will miss you very much… RIP.”
Stallone’s post was inundated with condolences as fans commented heartfelt messages in their droves, with one notably writing: “Oh my gosh I just found out.
“I’m sorry to hear to this. It’s so sad. Rest In Peace Burt.”
“RIP Paulie! An amazing actor. You will be missed Burt!” another shared.
A third commented: “This is such sad news. I had the great honor of meeting him briefly here in Philly, he was the kindest man.
“Rest in peace, Burt. My kids and I will always cherish the joy you brought to our lives.”
