Who was Dianne Feinstein?
Dianne Feinstein was a Democratic politician from California who dedicated her life to public service, first on the local level and later on the national one.
Becoming acting mayor of San Francisco when the sitting mayor was shot and killed in 1978, she ran for the job the following year and won, holding the post until 1988.
Two years later, she ran for governor of California but lost. In 1992, however, she became the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from California, a seat she held until her death.
Early Years
Dianne Feinstein was born Dianne Emiel Goldman in San Francisco on June 22, 1933. Born into a Jewish family, she attended a Roman Catholic school and a Jewish temple as a child and began showing an interest in politics around age 16.
After graduating from San Francisco’s Convent of the Sacred Heart High School, Dianne attended Stanford University, where she was active in student government. She graduated with her bachelor’s degree in 1955.
The following year, Dianne married Jack Berman, whom she met in the San Francisco district attorney’s office, and later had a daughter named Katherine.
In 1959, she and Berman divorced. Three years later, she married neurosurgeon Bertram Feinstein she met at a holiday party.

Dianne Feinstein died from natural causes at her home in Washington, D.C., at around 2:00 am Eastern Standard Time on September 29, 2023, at the age of 90.
Feinstein’s death was announced by her office on Friday. Tearful colleagues returned to the Senate floor on Friday morning to pay tribute to the first female mayor of San Francisco and California’s longest-serving senator.
Feinstein received many tributes from politicians such as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer; Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell; President Joe Biden; Vice President Kamala Harris; former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton;
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy; former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi; former Secretary of State and Senate colleague Hillary Clinton; fellow Senators Alex Padilla, Marco Rubio, Susan Collins, Patty Murray, Rick Scott, Josh Hawley, Lindsey Graham, and Chuck Grassley;
Representatives Barbara Lee and Adam Schiff, who are running for Feinstein’s Senate seat in the 2024 election; and California Governor Gavin Newsom, who is expected to appoint Feinstein’s replacement.
President Joe Biden called her ‘a pioneering American. A true trailblazer. And for Jill and me, a cherished friend.’
He ordered all flags on federal buildings to be at half-staff until Feinstein’s burial.
‘There’s no better example of her skillful legislating and sheer force of will than when she turned passion into purpose, and led the fight to ban assault weapons. Dianne made her mark on everything from national security to the environment to protecting civil liberties. She’s made history in so many ways, and our country will benefit from her legacy for generations,’ he said in a statement.
Vice President Kamala Harris called Feinstein ‘one of the greatest public servants that California and our nation has ever known.’
‘As the first woman president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, the first woman to serve as mayor of San Francisco, and the longest-tenured woman to serve in the United States Senate, Dianne Feinstein broke barriers, inspired generations of women to run for office, and improved the lives of millions of Americans through her vision, courage, and leadership,’ she said in a statement.
