Pat Leonard Sajak was born on October 26, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois. He was raised in Chicago as the son of Joyce Helen and Leonard Anthony Sajdak. All of his paternal grandparents were Polish.

Pat’s mother remarried after his father died when he was a child. Sajak attended Farragut High School and graduated in 1964. He attended Columbia College Chicago and worked at the front desk of the Palmer House Hotel.

While still a student at the local radio station WEDC, Sajak learned about the need for a news anchor from his broadcasting professor. He applied and was eventually assigned to the 6 a.m. time slot at the station. Sajak joined the American Army during the Vietnam War in 1968.

While in the Army, he worked as an Armed Forces Radio DJ. While DJing, he imitated Robin Williams’ character from the film Good Morning, Vietnam! by starting each program with the line “Good morning, Vietnam!” Sajak was their afternoon personality in Nashville in the early 1970s, spinning tracks from three to five p.m.

In the late 1970s, Sajak moved to Los Angeles in quest of work in the entertainment industry. In 1977, he landed a full-time job as a weatherman at KNBC-TV in Los Angeles,

Sajak won a contest to be a guest teen DJ on WLS radio’s Dick Biondi Show. Al Parker, his broadcasting instructor at Columbia College Chicago, told him that a local radio station (WEDC) was looking for a newsman. Sajak applied for the position and was employed between midnight to 6:00 a.m.

He joined the United States Army in 1968 and was dispatched to Vietnam to work as a disc jockey on Armed Forces Radio. Sajak claimed on the Military Channel’s An Officer and a Movie that he messed up President Richard Nixon’s 1969 Christmas presentation to the troops by mistakenly cutting the line off too soon. When Sajak realized the error, he decided not to resume the transmission.

He worked as a DJ for a Murray, Kentucky radio station for a year in the early 1970s. In the early 1970s, Sajak began DJing at Nashville’s 50,000-watt WSM; at the time, WSM played pop music during the day, and he was the 2:30-5:00 pm afternoon personality.
