Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President and presidential candidate of the NPP, mocked the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their lack of understanding of the credit scoring system he has proposed.
As part of his proposed policies, Dr. Bawumia has pledged to enhance smartphone accessibility for Ghanaians if elected president. At a campaign event, he detailed plans to collaborate with phone manufacturers to offer smartphones on a credit basis, allowing citizens to pay as little as one or two cedis monthly.
“We will ensure mobile phones are accessible. My government will partner with phone makers so Ghanaians can afford them on credit, paying just 1 or 2 cedis each month,” Dr. Bawumia declared, underscoring digital inclusion as a cornerstone of his administration’s agenda.

However, NDC communicators have mocked the policy, ridiculing Bawumia’s comparison of purchasing a mobile phone on credit and paying just 1 or 2 cedis each month, and questioning its feasibility.
Dr. Bawumia has hit back and mocked the NDC for their lack of appreciation of a system he said is common in developed countries among the working class.
“When we say we want to do something, they always say it is not possible. But it is possible,” Dr. Bawumia said in Hamile during his campaign tour.
“When I said a few days ago that Ghanaians suffer a lot because everything we want to buy, we have to use cash to buy everything. In the developed countries like the UK, Germany, Japan, and the United States, workers buy most things on credit. You buy a fridge, you buy a television, you buy a car, and you buy a mobile phone, you pay small, small, small. But in Ghana, you have to pay it all. So I said Ghana has reached a stage where we are going to introduce a credit scoring system that allows our workers to also pay small, small, small.”
“When I said it, they couldn’t understand. They don’t understand some of these things and we are going to do it and you can buy your mobile phone and pay small, small, small until you finish paying. And we will be introducing the credit scoring system,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia added that, typical of the NDC, he could assure everyone that the NDC would turn around and claim credit for the policy once it is successfully implemented.

“What I can assure you is that very soon, when the system starts working, you can be sure that the NDC will start to claim that it is they who introduced the system. They will claim that it is they who introduced the system just as they are claiming it is they who introduced Free Senior High School education.”
“We are bringing the credit scoring system so that our people can get good credit for goods so that they can pay small, small, small,” he stated.
