Sebastian Pinera was a Chilean politician and entrepreneur. Sebastián Piñera was one of the richest people in Chile for much of his life.

He served as President of Chile from 2010 to 2014 and then again from 2018 to 2022. As Chilean President, he was both preceded by and succeeded by Michelle Bachelet.

Piñera was born into a wealthy family in Santiago, Chile, in 1949. He studied economics at the Catholic University of Chile and then went on to earn a PhD in economics from Harvard University.

Cecilia Piñera Morel, born in 1978. She is an engineer and a businesswoman who works as the CEO of Bancard, a financial company owned by her father.

Sebastián Piñera Morel, born in 1982. He is a lawyer and a politician who serves as a deputy in the Chamber of Deputies of Chile for the District 11 of Santiago.

Cristóbal Piñera Morel, born in 1984. He is a computer engineer and a software developer who co-founded the company Hopin, a platform for online events.

Sebastian Piñera died on 6 February 2024 , after a helicopter he was reportedly flying crashed into a lake in southern Chile.

Piñera’s helicopter crashed near the town of Lago Ranco on the shores of the lake of the same name, Chile’s Interior Minister Carolina Toha confirmed to Reuters.

The helicopter, which Piñera was reportedly piloting himself, plunged about 40 meters deep into the lake, Chilean newspaper La Tercera reported.

There had been a strong storm been occurring in the area. According to La Nación, he survived the crash itself but the impact left him unconscious and unable to remove his safety belt; he drowned as a result.

The other three people on board survived. His body was subsequently retrieved by the Chilean Navy.

Pinera’s death was announced by Chile’s current leftist president, Gabriel Boric. ‘He genuinely sought what he thought was best for the country,’ said Boric.

President Gabriel Boric declared three days of national mourning and announced that Piñera would be given a state funeral to be organized by foreign minister Alberto van Klaveren.

According to Forbes, Sebastian Pinera net worth was projected to be US$2.7 billion as of January 2024, making him one of Chile’s wealthiest persons.

He built his wealth through investments in credit card companies and the country’s formerly state-run LATAM Airlines.
