Terry Venables, Former Australia, England, Barcelona and Tottenham soccer coach has died at the age of 80.

A statement from his family read: “We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness.

“We would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly sad time to allow us to mourn the loss of this lovely man who we were so lucky to have had in our lives.”

Who was Terry Venables?

Terence Venables was born in Dagenham on 6 January 1943, the only child of Fred and Myrtle Venables.

His father was a Navy petty officer who originally came from Barking.[5] His mother was Welsh, and her family lived in Clydach Vale.

When he was 13, his parents moved to run a pub in Romford, Essex, sending him to live with his maternal grandparents Ossie and Milly, who fostered his love of football.

Player: Venables played as a midfielder for Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Queens Park Rangers, and Crystal Palace.

He also represented England at various levels, earning two senior caps in 1964.

Manager: Venables began his managerial career at Crystal Palace, where he won the Second Division championship in 1979.

He then moved to Queens Park Rangers, leading them to the 1982 FA Cup Final and another Second Division title in 1983.

Barcelona: In 1984, Venables became the manager of Barcelona, one of the most prestigious clubs in the world.

He sold Diego Maradona and rebuilt the team with players like Gary Lineker, Mark Hughes, and Bernd Schuster.

He ended the club’s six-year wait for a La Liga title in 1985 and reached the 1986 European Cup Final, losing to Steaua Bucharest on penalties. He was nicknamed El Tel by the Spanish media and fans.

Tottenham Hotspur: Venables returned to England in 1987 and took charge of Tottenham Hotspur, his former club as a player.

He guided them to a FA Cup victory in 1991, beating Nottingham Forest 2-1 in the final. He also signed players like Paul Gascoigne, Gary Mabbutt, and Jurgen Klinsmann.

England: Venables became the England national team manager in 1994, succeeding Graham Taylor.

He led England to the semi-finals of the 1996 European Championships, which they hosted.

England beat Scotland, Netherlands, and Spain before losing to eventual champions Germany on penalties.

Venables resigned after the tournament, amid controversies over his business dealings.

Australia: Venables had a brief stint as the Australia national team manager from 1997 to 1998.

He helped them qualify for the 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup, where they finished as runners-up to Brazil.

He also coached them in the 1998 FIFA World Cup qualification, but they failed to reach the finals after losing to Iran on away goals.

The cause of death of Terry Venables is not officially confirmed yet.

However, some sources suggest that he had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for several years before his death.

Terry Venables died on 25 November 2023 at the age of 80.

He was widely regarded as one of the most influential and successful figures in English football history, and was praised for his tactical acumen, charisma, and innovation.

Terry Venables was survived by his wife Yvette, his son Nicholas, and his daughter Lucy.
