Harald Hasselbach, a defensive lineman for the Denver Broncos during the team’s back-to-back Super Bowl championships in the late 1990s, has died at age 56.

The Broncos announced Hasselbach’s death on Thursday, citing family. Hasselbach’s family said he died at home in the Denver area after a six-month fight with cancer.

Harald Hasselbach was a Dutch gridiron football player who was a defensive end in the Canadian Football League (CFL) and National Football League (NFL).

He played seven seasons in the NFL for the Denver Broncos from 1994 to 2000 and was a starter in Super Bowl XXXIII. He never missed a game (regular or playoff) in his seven seasons (121 games) in Denver.

Previously, he played four seasons for the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL and also played in a Grey Cup winning team.

He is one of at least ten players to have been a part of a winning team in a Grey Cup and a Super Bowl

In 2016, he was inducted into the British Columbia Football Hall of Fame. He was a defensive line coach at Regis Jesuit High School at the time of his death.

Who was Harald Hasselbach?

Harald Hasselbach was born in Amsterdam on 22 September 1967, to a Dutch father and a Surinamese mother.

His father was an agricultural engineer and the family moved frequently; he grew up in the Netherlands, Indonesia, Kenya, and Canada.

He was the younger brother of television presenter Ernst-Paul Hasselbach, who died in a road accident in 2008.

Harald Hasselbach died of mucinous adenocarcinoma on 23 November 2023, at the age of 56.

The Broncos announced Hasselbach’s death on Thursday, citing family.

Hasselbach’s family said he died at home in the Denver area after a six-month battle with cancer, telling ESPN that he was diagnosed with metastatic mucinous adenocarcinoma, a rare form of the disease.

‘We’d like to make it known that he passed from cancer peacefully in the comfort of his home, free of pain,’ Hasselbach’s family said in a statement to the network. ‘He’s had an overwhelming amount of support over the last week, including past teammates, coaches and family that’ve flown in from around the world.

‘… We learned he had the illness less than 6 months ago and he fought as hard any human possibly could, with incredible strength.’
