He developed a passion for sports at a younger age. Kirk attended Holland Christian High School in Holland, Michigan, where he starred in football, baseball (third baseman and a pitcher), and basketball for the Maroons athletic teams.
He played college football at Michigan State and was drafted by the team then known as the Washington Redskins in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft as a backup to Robert Griffin III.
During his time with the Redskins, Cousins earned the nickname ‘Captain Kirk’ from the media for his presence as a leader, referencing the Star Trek character
