He began his studies from 1980 at Ashburton College and graduated in 1984. He was known to be the head prefect of the college. He is known to have been married to Jodi in 1991.
He has opened up about the fact that his wife, Jodi, suffers from seizures, which led to him leave Christchurch More FM’s as the breakfast show host. The couple is known to have four children.
Supporting the “Vote NO” campaign, Simon Barnett had brought up his opiniated views against the Child Discipline Bill that was proposed in the New Zealand Parliament in the 2009 corporal punishment referendum.
