DeSantis, the son of Karen and Ronald Daniel DeSantis, was born in Jacksonville. He is of Italian ancestry: all of his eight great-grandparents were born in Italy and came from communes in the provinces of L’Aquila, Benevento, Avellino, and Campobasso.
His maternal great-great-grandfather Salvatore Storti arrived in the United States of America from Italy in 1904 and settled in Pennsylvania.
His great-great-grandmother Luigia Colucci traveled to America in 1917 along with her husband. His father set up Nielsen television rating boxes, and DeSantis’ mother was a nurse.
His family first relocated to Dunedin, Florida, when he was six years old, then to Orlando, Florida. His sister, Christina Marie DeSantis, passed away in 2015. She was born on May 5, 1985, in Orlando.

DeSantis received his commission as an officer in the US Army. He joined the Navy in 2004 and was assigned to the Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps during his second year of law school at Harvard. (JAG).
In 2005, he received his degree from Naval Justice School. Later that year, he was transferred to the Naval Station Mayport, Florida, JAG Trial Service Office Command South East.
He is on record to have been promoted from the lieutenant, junior grade to lieutenant in 2006. While employed by the commander of the Joint Task Force-Guantanamo (JTF-GTMO), he worked closely with detainees at the Guantanamo Bay Joint Detention Facility.
DeSantis reported to the Naval Special Warfare Command Group in Coronado, California, in 2007, where he was assigned to SEAL Team One and deployed to Iraq as the legal advisor to the SEAL Commander of Special Operations Task Force-West in Fallujah during the troop surge.
DeSantis returned to the United States in April 2008, and was assigned to the Naval Region Southeast Legal Service.
He was appointed as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice. Middle District of Florida Attorney’s Office DeSantis worked as a trial defense attorney until his honorable discharge from the military in February 2010.
DeSantis announced his intention to run in the Republican primary for Florida’s 6th congressional district in 2012.
The district was previously represented by 10-term Republican John Mica, but Mica’s share of Orlando had been drawn into the new 7th District, and Mica chose to run there despite the fact that the new 6th included the majority of his former territory.
DeSantis received 39% of the vote in the six-candidate Republican primary, while state representative Fred Costello received 23%.
DeSantis defeated Democratic nominee Heather Beaven 57-43% in the general election, with majorities in all four counties. In 2014 and 2016, he was re-elected.
