Margrethe II is Queen of Denmark. Having reigned as Denmark’s monarch for over 50 years, she is the world’s only current queen regnant and the longest-serving current female head of state. She has worked as a scenographer, costume designer, and Tolkien illustrator.

Born into the House of Glücksburg, a cadet branch of the House of Oldenburg, Margrethe is the eldest child of King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid. She became heir presumptive to her father in 1953, when a constitutional amendment allowed women to inherit the throne.

Margrethe succeeded her father upon his death on 14 January 1972. On her accession, she became the first female monarch of Denmark since Margrethe I, ruler of the Scandinavian kingdoms in 1376–1412 during the Kalmar Union.

Margrethe II is known for her strong archaeological passion and has participated in several excavations, including in Italy, Egypt, Denmark and South America. She shared this interest with her grandfather Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden, with whom she spent some time unearthing artefacts near Etruria in 1962.

As sovereign, Margrethe has received 42 official state visits and she has undertaken 55 foreign state visits herself. She and the royal family have made several other foreign visits. Support for the monarchy in Denmark has been and remains consistently high at around 82%, as does Margrethe’s personal popularity.

During her annual New Year’s Eve address on 31 December 2023, Margrethe announced that she will abdicate the throne in favour of her son, Crown Prince Frederik, on 14 January 2024, the 52nd anniversary of her accession.

She is the second daughter and child of King Frederick IX and Queen Ingrid of Denmark. She is the younger sister of the reigning Queen of Denmark, Margrethe II, and the older sister of Queen Anne-Marie of Greece.

Anne-Marie born 30 August 1946 is a Danish princess who was the Queen of Greece as the consort of Constantine II from their marriage on 18 September 1964 until the abolition of the Greek monarchy on 1 June 1973.

Princess Benedikte often represents her elder sister at official or semi-official events. She and her late husband, Richard, 6th Prince of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, had three children. Princess Benedikte is currently 11th and last in the line of succession to the Danish throne.

Anne-Marie is the youngest daughter of Frederick IX of Denmark and Ingrid of Sweden. In 1964, she married Constantine and became queen consort of Greece.

Anne-Marie spent much of her time working for a charitable foundation known as “Her Majesty’s Fund”, a foundation established by her mother-in-law, Queen Frederica of Greece.

In 1967, Anne-Marie and her family were forced into exile upon the rise of a military dictatorship. After fleeing to Rome, they eventually settled in London, when the Greek monarchy was officially abolished.

Anne-Marie and her family were stripped of their Greek citizenship and had their property revoked, leading them to sue them in the European Court of Human Rights, where they won and were allowed back into Greece.

Of the compensation she earned, Anne-Marie set up the “Anne-Marie Foundation”, which provided assistance to people in rural areas of Greece. In 2013, she and Constantine moved back into Greece and then to Athens in 2022. Constantine died in 2023.

Anne-Marie is the youngest sister of Margrethe II of Denmark. She is also the first cousin of Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and the second cousin of Harald V of Norway.

Anne-Marie and her husband Constantine were third cousins. They shared Christian IX of Denmark as patrilineal great-great-grandfather. They also shared Queen Victoria as their great-great-grandmother.

Queen Margrethe was married to her husband Henrik, Prince Consort of Denmark — born Henri Marie Jean André de Laborde de Monpezat in Talence, France — for over 50 years. The pair exchanged vows on June 10, 1967; upon their marriage, his name was Danicized to Henrik and he converted to Lutheranism.

“When I did meet the man I married, I fell in love with a bang,” Margrethe told biographer Anne Wolden-Ræthinge for Queen in Denmark: Margrethe II Talks About Her Life. Still, she made it clear to Wolden-Ræthinge that her duties to the throne would always come first: “Denmark is more important to me than anything else. I do not think I have ever even flirted with the idea of putting my marriage before the throne.”

Prince Henrik died on Feb. 13, 2018. Per his request, half of his ashes were scattered in the sea; the other half was buried in the Fredensborg Castle garden.

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has two sons: Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark, and Prince Joachim of Denmark.

Crown Prince Frederik is the oldest son of Margrethe and Henrik, making him first in the line of succession to the throne. Born by emergency cesarean section on May 26, 1968, he became the Crown Prince of Denmark at the age of 4.

Prince Frederik studied political science at Aarhus University and spent a year at Harvard University. In the ’90s, he worked for the U.N. and at the Danish Embassy in Paris. Frederik underwent extensive military training in the Danish Navy, Army and Air Force and has a keen interest in environmentalism. He even co-authored the 2009 book Polartokt Kongelig about the politics of climate change.

The royal met his wife of nearly 20 years, Mary Donaldson, at a pub in Australia while in town for the 2000 Summer Olympics, introducing himself merely as “Fred.” The pair married on May 14, 2004, whereupon she became Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark.

Frederik shares four children with Mary: Prince Christian, Princess Isabella and twins Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent.

Prince Joachim is the youngest son of Queen Margrethe and Henrik. Born on June 7, 1969, he is sixth in line for the Danish throne, after his older brother Frederik and Frederik’s four children.

Like his grandfather and brother before him, Joachim has had a lengthy military career, working his way up from a junior officer in 1987 to a special advisor to the Chief of Defense in the Royal Danish Army.

On June 26, 2020, he became the first Danish officer to complete additional education at France’s École Militaire and was subsequently promoted to Brigadier General. That same year, Joachim underwent emergency surgery for a blood clot in his brain.

Joachim has been married twice. He met his first wife, Alexandra, Countess of Fredriksborg, at a private party in Hong Kong; they married in November 1995. The couple welcomed two children, Nikolai and Felix, before divorcing in April 2005.

Joachim then married Marie Cavallier, later Princess Marie of Denmark, in 2008. They share two children: Henrik and Athena.
