On Wednesday, her father Loren Broadbent announced her death on Facebook.
“With great sadness, I must inform you all that our beloved friend, mentor and daughter Hydeia, passed away today after living with AIDS since birth,” he wrote alongside a photo of her. “Despite facing numerous challenges throughout her life, Hydeia remained determined to spread hope and positivity through education around HIV/AIDS.”
Who was HIV activist Hydeia Broadbent?
Hydeia Broadbent was an HIV activist and motivational speaker born on June 14, 1984.
Broadbent was adopted as an infant by Loren and Patricia Broadbent after her birth mother abandoned her at the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada.
After being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS at a young age, Broadbent spent the rest of her life advocating for its awareness.
“My life’s mission is met in two folds: first to use my life as a prevention tool for those who are HIV negative to make informed decisions to stay HIV negative, and also for those living with HIV/AIDS to find hope and inspiration not to allow HIV or AIDS to hold them back from living their best life,” she once said.
“I use my testimony as a warning of what you don’t want to go through.”

Hydeia Broadbent was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS when she was three years old.
However, the prominent activist has been HIV/AIDS positive since birth.
Broadbent started her journey as an activist at only six years old having shared her story on national platforms, taking part in interviews with Oprah and Magic Johnson.
In 1996, she was appointed as a speaker for the Republican National Convention confidently declaring: “I am the future, and I have AIDS.”
In 2002, the Broadbent family published a book called You Get Past The Tears: A Memoir of Love and Survival.
Additionally, Broadbent has represented the Magic Johnson Foundation since 2014 alongside other activists.

When doctors confirmed her diagnosis, they declared Broadbent wouldn’t make it past five years old, however, the legend made it to 39 years old with a strong legacy.
