He attended the University of California, Berkeley, and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity.

He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1964 with a degree in history and psychology.

He moved to Hollywood in 1968 and appeared in various films and TV shows, often playing hulking or imposing characters due to his height (6 ft 8 in) and deep voice Some of his notable roles include:

Joseph Smith, the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, in the 1977 film Brigham.

Eugene, a gangster on the TV series Happy Days in the episode “Fonzie’s Funeral” in 1979.

Xusia, a sorcerer in the 1982 fantasy film The Sword and the Sorcerer.

Hurok, a villain in the 1983 sci-fi film Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn. He shaved his head for this role and kept the look for his future projects.

Bull Shannon, a lovable bailiff on the NBC sitcom Night Court from 1984 to 1992. This was his most famous role and earned him a lot of popularity and recognition. He also appeared on the TV game show Super Password during this time.

He also contributed his voice to various video games and comic book projects.

He died on October 26, 2023 at his home in Big Bear Lake, California at the age of 80.
