Apfel served as a visiting professor at University of Texas at Austin in 2012 at 90 years old. She was named one of the fifty Best-Dressed over 50s by The Guardian in 2013.
She became a fashion icon, she signed to IMG in 2019 as a model at age 97, and she was featured in a 2014 documentary called Iris by Albert Maysles.

A spokesman for her estate confirmed the news to the New York Times and revealed that she died in her Palm Beach, Florida, home.
