Charlie Munger, investing genius and Warren Buffett’s right-hand man, dies at age 99.
Berkshire Hathaway, the investment firm where Munger served as vice chairman, said in a press release that Munger passed “peacefully” on Tuesday morning in a California hospital.
No cause of death was released with the statement announcing that Charlie had died.
Given his advanced age, though, it seems likely that some combination of natural causes may ultimately be responsible.
Who was Charlie Munger?
Born on January 1, 1924, Charlie Munger was an American businessman and investor from Omaha, Nebraska.
Munger was vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, the conglomerate controlled by Warren Buffett.
Following his time in the U.S. Army Air Corps, he went on to graduate from Harvard Law School.
He then relocated to Southern California and began practicing real estate law.
When he returned to Omaha in 1959, Munger met Buffett through an investor client of the latter; the duo went on to become best friends.
Coincidentally, Munger worked at Buffett’s grandfather’s grocery store, Buffet & Sons, when he was a teenager.
He also became chairman of the Daily Journal Corporation and a director of Costco Wholesale Corporation.
Munger’s firm was a part of Bill Gates and Melinda French’s divorce proceedings, where he represented the former.
On November 28, 2023, 99-year-old Munger died peacefully in a California hospital.
Who was Charles Munger married to?
From both of his previous marriages, Munger was widowed twice.
He was first married to Nancy Huggins, whom he met while studying at the California Institute of Technology.
The pair wed in 1945 and had three children; Wendy, Molly, and Teddy.
Teddy passed away at nine years old from leukemia.
Huggins and Munger divorced in 1953 and he remarried a woman named Nancy Barry Borthwick three years later.
Munger and Borthwick had four children; Charles Jr., Emilie, Barry, and Philip.
Munger was also stepfather to two of Borthwick’s children, William Harold and David Borthwick.
Borthwick and Munger remained married until 2010 when she passed away at home at 86 years old.
