Matt Ulrich, Super Bowl champion and retired Indianapolis Colts offensive guard has died at 41.
Indianapolis Colts Owner Jim Irsay announced former player passing In Irsay’s statement on X (formerly Twitter) he said:
I am heartbroken to hear of the passing of Matt Ulrich. Matt was with us only two seasons, but left his mark on many. Great guy, I hear he was a great dad—and he was a Super Bowl champ. My prayers to his family.
Who was Matt Ulrich?
Matt Ulrich was an American football player who was born on December 30, 1981 in Streamwood, Illinois.
He played high school football at Streamwood High School, where he won All-State and All-Midwest honors and was a three-time Academic All-State.
He then attended Northwestern University on a football scholarship, where he was a three-year starter on the offensive line and team captain as a senior in 2004.
He also earned Academic All-Big Ten honors and set several weight room records.
He signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2005 and played two seasons with them, winning Super Bowl XLI in 2006.
He retired from football in 2007 and pursued a career in sports performance, coaching, and professional networking.
Matt Ulrich cause of death
A cause of death for the former Colts player and Super Bowl winner has not been announced yet, but he leaves behind a wife, Alison, and four children in Gunther, Dalton, Bowden, and Thoreau.
His wife, Alison, made an emotional post on Facebook after his death.
“Our beloved, one of a kind Matt has passed away and is in a better place,” Alison wrote. “Matt, we love you so so much. You are profoundly missed. We all want you back for just one more day. One more hug. One more kiss. One more laugh. One more joke. One more wrestle with the boys. It seems impossible to do this life without you.
“Please pray for peace and comfort for the boys. They have lost their greatest fan, coach and friend.”
Ulrich was also mourned publicly by one of his college teammates at Northwestern. “My heart is broken,” Trai Essex tweeted.
“My lineman brother. My NU brother. One of the best hearts you could ever hope to be around. Helped me to become the player I became. RIP Chesty.”
