She had a doctorate in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University.

She faced criticism and controversy for several issues in the handling of ballots and elections, such as uncounted ballots, destroyed ballots, and recount problems.

She resigned in 2018 after a legal dispute with Governor Rick Scott, who had suspended her for alleged malfeasance.

She died on November 2, 2023 at the age of 80. She was remembered as a trailblazer and a mentor by many who knew her.
