Despite receiving care from medical professionals at the Royal Marsden and Brompton hospitals, she succumbed to the illness in the early hours of October 20th in a hospital, surrounded by her loved ones.

She was 66 years old. She was a celebrated actor who had a remarkable career on stage and screen, playing roles such as Margaret Thatcher, Camilla Parker Bowles, and Lady Susan Hussey.

She was also a singer and dancer who performed in musicals such as Billy Elliot and City of Angels.

She was praised for her versatility, talent, and kindness by many of her colleagues and fans. She left behind two sons and a partner.

Haydn Gwynne was born on 21 March 1957 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex, to Rosamond (née Dobson) and Guy Thomas Haydn Gwynne.

She played county level tennis before studying sociology at the University of Nottingham, and was fluent in French and Italian.

After university she took a five-year lectureship in Italy at the University of Rome La Sapienza, where she taught English as a foreign language.

Haydn Gwynne was a British actress who had a successful career in television, theatre, and film. Here are some highlights of her career:

She became an actress in her mid-twenties, after teaching English in Italy for five years.

She was nominated for a BAFTA TV Award for her role as Alex Pates in the comedy series Drop the Dead Donkey (1990–1991).

She won a Drama Desk Award and was nominated for a Tony Award for playing Mrs Wilkinson in Billy Elliot the Musical on Broadway.

She played Queen Camilla in the royal spoof The Windsors (2016–2023) and Lady Susan Hussey in the fifth season of The Crown.

She also appeared in many other TV shows, such as Nice Work, Peak Practice, Merseybeat, Rome, and The Secret.

She performed in various West End and Royal Shakespeare Company productions, such as Ziegfeld, City of Angels, The Audience, and Richard III.

She wrote two novels, The House by the Loch and The Legacy of Elizabeth Pringle .

A statement from her agent said: “It is with great sadness we are sharing with you that, following her recent diagnosis with cancer, the star of stage and screen Haydn Gwynne died in hospital in the small hours of Friday October 20, surrounded by her beloved sons, close family and friends.

“We would like to thank the staff and teams at the Royal Marsden and Brompton Hospitals for their wonderful care over the last few weeks.”

Among those paying tribute to Haydn Gwynne was Jack Thorne, whose play When Winston Went to War With the Wireless starred Gwynne at the Donmar Warehouse in London this year.

Thorne said: “Haydn Gwynne was the kindest, loveliest soul and a wonderful performer. She gave everything to everything.”

The writer Jonathan Harvey called her “a gifted and versatile all-rounder”.

Helen King, a retired police officer who is now principal of St Anne’s College, Oxford, said that Gwynne had job shadowed her for her role as Supt Susan Blake in the TV series Merseybeat.

“I remember her as perceptive, hard-working and funny,” said King.
