Who was Walt Garrison?

Walter Garrison, fondly known as Walt, was an American professional football player who carved a niche for himself in the NFL.

Born in Denton, Texas, Walter Benton Garrison attended Lewisville High School, where he played as a linebacker in football and also participated in basketball and baseball.

After high school, Garrison played college football for the Oklahoma State Cowboys, showcasing his prowess in the game.

His exceptional skills did not go unnoticed, and he was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the fifth round (79th overall) of the 1966 NFL Draft.

Walt Garrison Career in Football

Walt Garrison’s professional career was nothing short of extraordinary. In his initial years, he mainly served as a kickoff returner. However, his big break came in 1969 when he took over as a fullback, following the retirement of Don Perkins. That year, he recorded a career-high 818 rushing yards, scoring 2 touchdowns, and forming one of the league’s best running back duos with Calvin Hill.

Despite suffering pinched nerves in his neck during training camp in 1973, Garrison displayed immense resilience, making a comeback and regaining his starting position by the sixth game of the season. His off-field interests included professional rodeo, and his signing bonus with the Cowboys even included a horse trailer.

A Life Beyond Football

Beyond his football career, Walt Garrison was known for his association with the professional rodeo circuit and his work as a long-time spokesman for Skoal smokeless tobacco. He also served as the television spokesman for Bill Utter Ford near Denton, Texas.

In 1988, he published his biography titled “Once a Cowboy,” a title that encapsulated not only his rodeo cowboy career but also his football career with the Dallas Cowboys and his college career with the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Garrison also served military duty in New Jersey and Fort Lewis and established the Walt Garrison Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.

I just read that Walt Garrison passed away. Many will know him as a Super Bowl champ with the Dallas Cowboys who famously received a horse trailer as part of his NFL signing bonus. For people in my community Walt Garrison was a legendary Lewisville High School Fighting Farmer. He liked to rodeo, chew tobacco and whittle wood. The picture below is from 2016 when I met Walt at his house. He‘s holding his dad’s leather helmet from LHS! He was so kind and gracious. RIP Mr. Garrison. Condolences to his family. Sad news out of the Metroplex last night. One of our favorite Cowboys, Walt Garrison, has passed away at the age of 79.. a real cowboy he was… Tom Landry said he and Lee Roy Jordan were maybe the two toughest players he ever coached.. RIP Walt.
