The bodybuilding community is in mourning after the death of former Mr Olympia competitor Neil Currey, who died on Monday at the age of 34.
Milos Sarcev, Currey’s former trainer, announced the news Monday on Instagram, calling it “absolutely shocking” and “heartbreaking.”
Who was Neil Currey?
Neil Currey was a British professional bodybuilder and fitness enthusiast.
He was born and raised in the UK, bodybuilding outlet Generation Iron reports.
Neil’s powerlifting journey began in his youth when he played football at school.
He gradually shifted his focus to bodybuilding with a strict gym regimen and diet plan.
Currey stepped onto the stage at the 2017 World Championships and won fifth place in the pro muscle category.
The following year his career took a major turn when he was crowned with the top spot at the NPC Worldwide Amateur Olympia Italy – gaining his Pro Card.

Neil Currey made a name for himself at several high-profile bodybuilding events, eventually winning the 2022 New York Pro competition.
The bodybuilding ace had previously competed in the New York Pro and Puerto Rico Pro where he came first and third in the Men’s Classic Physique category.

The cause of death has not been officially confirmed, however Sarcev’s initial Instagram post mentioned suicide, though this detail was later edited and removed.
Sarcev wrote: ‘Absolutely shocking, heartbreaking news – that my former athlete @neil_currey died today…taking his own life.
‘My last/best memory of him was this smiling face after he won New York Pro and fulfilled his lifetime dream of qualifying for the Mr. Olympia.
‘I am lost for words and filled with pain and sadness. My sincere condolences to his family, friends and loved ones. RIP Neil and God bless your soul.’
Tributes have poured in online as news of Neil Currey’s death emerged.
‘Hands down one of my most favourite bodybuilders. Taken away too soon,’ wrote one fan on X.
‘This is so sad. Thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends,’ wrote another.
Another fan posted on X: ‘What a tragic loss! That inspiration ever since my first thoughts into this bodybuilding world came from people like #Neil Currey. That inspiration will never be lost! RIP one of the greatest!!!’
Prominent bodybuilding news site RX Muscle posted a message to Instagram: ‘Stunned and beyond saddened by the tragic news that Neil Currey has passed away at the young age of 34. We pass our most sincere and deepest condolences to Neil’s family, friends, and to all of his fans around the world.’
