Who was Ryan Mallet?
Ryan Mallett born on June 5, 1988 was an American professional football player who was a quarterback in the National Football League (NFL).
Mallett was born in Batesville, Arkansas. His father, Jim, was a high school teacher and football coach and mother, Debbie, was a teacher. He has an older sister, Lauren.
The family moved to Texarkana, Texas, when he was four years old. He became friends with Will Middlebrooks when they met in a football camp in the seventh grade.
Mallett graduated from Texas High School in Texarkana, and was ranked as the No. 2 quarterback and No. 4 overall player in the nation by Rivals.com. He was also the Gatorade Player of the Year in Texas in 2006.
Mallett participated in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in 2007 and won the Glenn Davis Army Award as the best player on the West team. He chose to play at Michigan over numerous Power 5 offers.
Mallett’s NCAA career
Mallett was a top recruit coming out of high school and initially committed to the University of Michigan. He transferred after the 2007 season and played two years for the University of Arkansas before he entered the NFL Draft in 2011.
Mallett, who stood 6’7”, threw 62 touchdown passes in two seasons with the Razorbacks and guided the program to the Sugar Bowl in 2010. He was regarded as one of the top quarterbacks available in his draft year, with some projecting him as a first-round pick.
Said many times that Ryan Mallett was the best QB in Razorback history. Skill set unmatched. Great competitor & his teammates loved him. Some of this throws & moments are burned forever in my Hog memory. RIP one five. Razorback Nation forever grateful

NFL career and entry into coaching
The New England Patriots selected Mallett in the third round to compete for the role of Tom Brady’s backup — and some even compared Mallett to Brady, given six quarterbacks were taken in 2011 (just as they were in Brady’s 2000 draft year) before the Patriots got their man.
But Mallett played only four games in two seasons for New England before he was traded to Houston, which gave him a shot as the starting quarterback in 2014 before a torn pectoral muscle ended his season prematurely. The Texans released Mallett in 2015, and he played parts of three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens before he retired from the NFL.
Mallett took up coaching after his playing days ended. He was an assistant coach at Mountain Home High School in his native Arkansas, and he was named head coach at White Hall High School — also in his home state — in 2022.
