Pitso Mosimane Biography
Pitso Mosimane began his senior career at Jomo Cosmos, then moved on to Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates before joining Greek club Ionikos and working under coach Nikos Alefantos. Later, he played for Belgian club KFC Rita Berlaar and Qatari club Al Sadd.
Mosimane worked as an assistant coach to the under-11 players at Belgian club KFC Rita Berlaar before returning to South Africa to coach Mamelodi Sundowns reserves.
Mosimane joined Supersport United as an assistant coach to Bruce Grobbelaar before taking over as head coach from 2001 to 2007, finishing second in the Premier Soccer League in 2001-02 and 2002-03.
Mosimane was the caretaker coach of South Africa’s national team, Bafana Bafana, for seven games in 2007. During the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, he also assisted Joel Santana, Parreira’s successor and later predecessor.
Mosimane was named South Africa’s new head coach on July 15, 2010, and was given a four-year contract. His first game in charge was a 1-0 victory over World Cup quarterfinalists Ghana.
South Africa failed to qualify for the 2012 African Cup of Nations after Mosimane mistakenly played for a draw against Sierra Leone in the final qualifier, when a victory was required.
Mosimane took over as manager of Mamelodi Sundowns in 2012. He and Mamelodi Sundowns won the CAF Champions League in 2016 after defeating Egypt’s Zamalek 3-1 on aggregate, becoming the second South African team to do so after Orlando Pirates in 1995.
According to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics, Mosimane was named the world’s 10th best coach in December 2016. (IFFHS).
Pitso Mosimane won the Coach of the Year award at the 2016 Glo-CAF awards in Abuja, Nigeria on 5 January 2017 after leading Mamelodi Sundowns to league and Telkom Knockout glory in 2015-16, making him the only coach to have won a clean sweep of all domestic trophies.
Pitso Mosimane led Mamelodi Sundowns to a 5-0 win over Egyptian club Al Ahly in the 2018-19 CAF Champions League quarter-finals on 6 April 2019, which he won 5-1 on aggregate to advance to the semi-finals.
Mosimane is widely regarded as South Africa’s most successful manager, having won five ABSA Premiership titles with Mamelodi Sundowns. Mosimane resigned as Mamelodi Sundowns coach in late September 2020.
Mosimane was named Al Ahly’s head coach on September 30, 2020. He was the club’s first non-Egyptian African manager.
Pitso Mosimane led Al Ahly to their 9th CAF Champions League title on November 27, 2020, after winning the 2020 final against rivals Zamalek, and to qualify for the 2020 FIFA Club World Cup, where they finished third after beating Palmeiras on penalties.
Pitso Mosimane led Al Ahly to victory in the Egyptian Cup on December 6, 2020. He led the football club to victory in the African Super Cup against RS Berkane in Doha, Qatar, in May 2021.
Al Ahly won their second CAF Champions League title under Mosimane and their tenth overall on July 17, 2021, with a 3-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs in the final.
Rory Smith argued that Mosimane was one of the best managers in the world during his eight-month tenure, during which Al Ahly won three trophies.
In December 2021, he defeated Raja Casablanca in the African Super Cup in Qatar. Al Ahly accepted Mosimane’s request to step down as manager on June 13, 2022.
