Dianne Feinstein bio
American politician, Dianne Feinstein was born on June 22nd, 1933 in San Francisco. Her paternal grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Poland.
Her maternal grandparents, the Rosenburgs, were from Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Despite having German-Jewish origin, they followed the Russian Orthodox (Christian) religion since Jews in Saint Petersburg were forced to do so.
Although Feinstein cites Judaism as her religion, her mother was raised as a Christian and insisted that she switch from a Jewish day school to a prestigious local Catholic school.
She received her high school diploma from Convent of the Sacred Heart in 1951 and her bachelor’s degree in history from Stanford University in 1955.
Feinstein’s mother allegedly mistreated her, according to numerous reports. Yvonne Banks, Feinstein’s sister, claimed that their mother had erratic moods.
A later brain scan of Feinstein’s mother revealed that the area of the brain involved in “judgment” had shrunk.

In 1969, Feinstein won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. In 1978, when she was the board’s first female president, Dan White’s murders of Mayor George Moscone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk gained widespread notice.
Feinstein became the first woman to hold the office of mayor when she succeeded Moscone. She handled the 1984 Democratic National Convention while in office and oversaw the city’s cable car reconstruction.
Feinstein was a tremendously popular mayor and was awarded the best effective mayor in the nation by City & State in 1987, despite a recall attempt in 1983.
Feinstein won a special election to the U.S. Senate in 1992 after finishing second in a 1990 contest for governor.
Pete Wilson, who she lost to in the 1990 governor’s race, resigned, which led to the special election. Feinstein became California’s first female U.S. senator after winning a special election and taking the oath of office before Boxer, despite running on the same ballot as her colleague Barbara Boxer.

When Alan Cranston retired in January 1993, she was elected as the state’s senior senator. In the 2012 election, Feinstein earned 7.86 million votes, the most votes ever cast in a U.S. Senate race. She has been reelected five times.
The 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban, which took effect in 2004, was written by Feinstein. In 2013, she put out a new assault weapon measure that was unsuccessful.
Dianne Feinstein was the first woman to preside over a U.S. presidential inauguration and the first woman to chair both the Senate Rules Committee and the Senate Intelligence Committee.
She chaired the International Narcotics Control Caucus from 2009 to 2015 and served as the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee from 2017 to 2021.
Dianne Feinstein is the oldest serving senator and member of Congress at 89 years old. She surpassed Hiram Johnson in March 2021 to become the senator from California with the longest tenure.
Don Young passed away in March 2022, making her the oldest serving congresswoman. After Barbara Mikulski retired from the Senate in January 2017, Feinstein became the senator with the longest tenure; on November 5, 2022, she surpassed Mikulski’s record.
On January 3, 2023, she passed Patrick Leahy to become the oldest Democrat in the Senate. This made her eligible for the traditional role of Senate President pro tempore, but she declined it, thus Patty Murray took it.
Representatives from California Katie Porter and Adam Schiff began running for Feinstein’s Senate seat in January 2023. Feinstein made the decision not to seek reelection in February 2023.
