Born as Didik Prasetyo, or Dionisius Prasetyo, on December 31, 1966, Didi Kempot was raised among a family of entertainers in Surakarta, Indonesia.
His brothers were comedians and mother was a traditional Javanese singer. Kempot took after his mother in pursuit of a music career.
He started writing his own songs in his late teens and early twenties, performing as a busker. Aged 18, Kempot started his own band, Kelompok Pengamen Trotoar (The Sidewalk Buskers’ Group).

For years, Kempot performed as a busker on the streets of Indonesia before he finally caught a break into the industry.
In 1989, Kempot signed to a music label and his songs were taken worldwide. Kempot’s fanbase grew in the Netherlands and Suriname, two countries which have a significant Javanese population. His breakthrough single, Cidro, was wildly popular in these countries, as well as his own.
Google Doodle celebrates Didi’s lifetime achievements
Google Doodle selects February 26 to celebrate Didi as it is the anniversary of one of the singer’s great achievements. Three years ago to this day, Kempot received a Billboard Indonesia Lifetime Achievement Award.
Didi was present at the ceremony. He performed Pamer Bojo with singer Isyana Sarasvati at the awards show to mark his achievements.
Kempot had been performing for decades and became famous for his campur sari songs, a blend of traditional Javanese and modern music.
Just under three months after Didi received the Lifetime Achievement Award, the singer passed away. He died on May 5, 2020 at the age of 53. Just weeks before he passed away, the singer had raised £400,000 to fight the covid-19 pandemic, Metro reports.
The fundraising concert took place on April 11, 2020 at the Lokananta music studio and was broadcast on national television. It was virtually attended by Indonesian president Joko Widodo.
