Ghanaian media personality Captain Smart is facing intense criticism after his past comments about AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) resurfaced in the wake of a deadly clash at the company’s Obuasi mining site.
The violent confrontation on January 18, 2025, between illegal miners and security forces resulted in the deaths of seven individuals and one serious injury.
Many are now pointing to a previous broadcast by Captain Smart, where he made inflammatory remarks against AGA, accusing the company of exploiting local communities with military support.
In the controversial video, Captain Smart called on the youth of Obuasi to take action against AGA. He urged them to “storm” the mining site and expressed frustration with the company’s operations, which he claimed were harming the community.
His words included a threat to expel AGA from the country, saying, “If you don’t take care, we will chase you out of this country.” Critics have raised concerns that Captain Smart’s fiery rhetoric may have played a role in inciting the violent clash between the illegal miners and the military, which occurred when miners breached AGA’s security and attempted to access a restricted area.
According to the Ghana Armed Forces, the miners, who were armed with weapons such as rifles and machetes, opened fire on the soldiers, who responded in self-defense.
The military’s actions resulted in the fatalities. While Captain Smart has not yet publicly addressed the incident, his previous statements have sparked widespread debate about the responsibility of media personalities in shaping public sentiment.
The government has expressed deep regret over the loss of life, with President John Mahama ordering an immediate investigation into the incident.
