Elikem Kumordzie faces backlash over claim he inspired John Mahama’s inauguration outfit

Ghanaian fashion designer Elikem Kumordzie, aka ‘ElikemTheTailor,’ is no stranger to the spotlight, but his recent comments about President John Dramani Mahama’s inauguration outfit have set social media ablaze.

Elikem stirred up a storm when he claimed that he was the original source of inspiration for Mattew Agambire, the designer behind Mahama’s stunning look.

Mahama’s inauguration outfit, designed by Agambire, was an instant hit. The blend of Kente fabric and Adinkra symbols captured both the essence of Ghanaian culture and a message of unity, making it a showstopper at the event.

As praise flooded in for Agambire’s work, the young designer, who also serves as the president’s stylist, was rightfully in the spotlight for his exceptional piece.

But just as the buzz around the outfit was reaching its peak, Elikem decided to weigh in. On Instagram, he posted a picture grid showing both his 2018 designs and Mahama’s inauguration outfit, suggesting that Agambire had either copied or been inspired by his previous works.

“I can understand why everyone thought I made @officialjdmahama’s outfit that day; my phone was going off. Even with the Adinkra symbols and all. But no, it wasn’t me (in Shaggy’s voice). I’m just happy to have inspired. Congratulations again to HE @officialjdmahama. Well deserved, sir,” he wrote, playing it cool, yet making his point.

But that wasn’t all. Elikem followed up with another post showing a similar design he created for a couple in 2019, complete with Kente fabric. His caption? “Flash Back Friday with our couple from 2019.”

It was clear that Elikem was positioning himself as the true pioneer of this style.Unfortunately, not everyone was impressed by Elikem’s move.

Social media erupted, and the designer faced heavy criticism. Many felt his comments were unnecessary and fueled unnecessary competition in the industry.

Some even accused him of jealousy, claiming that rather than celebrating Agambire’s success, he was trying to steal a little of the limelight for himself.
