Legendary Ghanaian gospel musician Yaw Sarpong has sparked conversation after a video surfaced on social media showing him performing at a church event, despite his ongoing health struggles.
The ailing icon, who has faced severe health challenges, appeared to be slowly recovering, although the effects of his condition were still visible.
Yaw Sarpong, known for his powerful gospel music with his Asomafo band, has been battling a serious stroke, which left him bedridden and unable to create new music.
His colleagues, including gospel artist Diana Asamoah, as well as his family and manager, have confirmed that the stroke has significantly affected his ability to work.
Aside from his health issues, Yaw Sarpong has also faced financial difficulties, struggling to pay for his medical treatments. His family and team were forced to publicly solicit funds to cover his hospital bills.
In a show of support, Ghana’s Vice President and the New Patriotic Party’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, stepped in to help during a campaign tour in the Ashanti Region.
He visited Yaw Sarpong at his home, accompanied by fellow gospel musician Nicholas Omane Acheampong and Chairman Wontumi, and provided financial assistance.
Things took a controversial turn when Yaw Sarpong’s estranged wife made allegations against him during an appearance on media personality Auntie Naa‘s radio show.
Despite the challenges, a viral video from a recent event shows Yaw Sarpong performing with his Asomafo band at a New Year church gathering.
While still recovering from the stroke, Yaw Sarpong couldn’t stand for long and had to sit behind his band as Maame Tiwaa led the music session.
Once known for his sharp looks and trademark flat-top haircut, the gospel legend now looks unrecognizable. Dressed in a jalabiya outfit, he had a bald head and appeared visibly tired.
