Actress Nadia Buari joins calls for action against galamsey “Let’s stop this evil”

Award-winning actress Nadia Buari has spoken out against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, urging an end to the harmful practice.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on September 27, Nadia expressed her frustration with the “greedy” nature of politicians and highlighted the factors that contribute to illegal mining in Ghana.

Nadia Buari pointed out that the “ill-acquired wealth” of politicians often harms ordinary citizens. She believes this has created a “wrong hunger” among people, pushing them to take matters into their own hands through activities that damage land, rivers, and farms.

“Ignorance, poverty, greed, and the desperate desire to get rich quickly seem to drive the harmful practice of illegal mining, which is destroying our country,” she tweeted.

She reflected on how, in the past, people blamed foreign powers for harming their future. Now, she believes that the actions of local leaders are responsible for the current destruction.

Nadia called on all stakeholders—including parents, religious leaders, and concerned citizens—to unite against illegal mining, emphasizing its risks for future generations. “Let’s rise up to stop this greed before it harms our future. We need to abandon this evil act for the sake of our children,” she urged.

She stressed that public education is crucial to raise awareness about the dangers of illegal mining. “Our children should learn not only about Ghana’s gold production but also about the risks of misusing our land for quick gains,” she said.

Commenting on the recent protests organized by Democracy Hub, where some demonstrators were arrested, Nadia condemned the actions of law enforcement. She stated that those protesting against illegal mining are exercising their rights and should not be arrested.

“Expressing our rights peacefully is important, and we must support all forms of lawful protests against wrongdoings that affect our land,” she concluded.
