American-Siberian musical artist and eco-advocate Milana May recently completed a remarkable challenge by swimming across Lake Bosomtwe in the Ashanti region of Ghana.
This stunning natural lake, known for its beauty and ecological significance, served as the backdrop for Milana’s ambitious journey, which aimed to promote eco-tourism and raise awareness about environmental conservation.
Before diving into the lake, Milana took the time to seek blessings from local chiefs and elders. They performed traditional rituals on the shore, praying for her safe passage and a smooth voyage.

On September 20, 2024, Milana May began her adventure, determined to swim back and forth across one of Ghana’s largest natural lakes. Clad in a bright jumpsuit and swimming goggles, she waved to the enthusiastic crowd gathered to support her before diving into the water.
As she entered the lake, she quickly disappeared from view, marking the start of her incredible journey.
Milana completed her challenge on Monday, September 23, 2024, after days of swimming and dedication. The expedition, aptly named the “Milana May Freedom Swim,” was not just a physical feat but also a platform to emphasize the importance of protecting the environment.
“Swimming across Lake Bosomtwe is not just about sport or celebration; it’s about highlighting the fragility of our ecosystems,” Milana stated. “We must do everything we can to protect and nourish these natural environments for ourselves and future generations.” Her message resonates with many, reminding us of the responsibility we share in safeguarding our planet.
