Asamoah Gyan ‘ditches’ Dr. Bawumia and NPP three months before 2024 elections

Ghanaian football icon Asamoah Gyan has made a surprising move by announcing his departure from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Bawumia campaign team.

In a September 11, 2024, social media statement, Gyan announced he is leaving political affiliations to concentrate on his work as a former footballer and philanthropist.

Gyan’s announcement comes just three months before the crucial 2024 elections, and he did not provide specific reasons for his decision. However, he emphasized his commitment to continuing his humanitarian work and supporting the youth of Ghana.

In his statement, Gyan wrote: “I haven’t been fair to the youth and the people of Ghana. Henceforth, I am not affiliated with any political party. I will continue with my humanitarian work and help the youth of Ghana in my own small way. Nothing political. I wish all the political parties a peaceful election on the 7th of December. God bless our homeland Ghana. Thank you.”

Gyan, who was previously the chairman of the youth and sports sub-committee for the Bawumia 2024 manifesto, stated that he would focus on his foundation and other initiatives to support Ghanaian youth. He mentioned that through his foundation and the All Regional Games, he would address issues related to Ghanaian sports and continue his efforts to develop young talent.

“This is not about politics; I am fully independent from political influence. This is about our children, our communities, and our continent. Together, with the support of international organizations, royal families, and philanthropic partners, we can create lasting change that empowers our youth to build the future they deserve,” Gyan explained.

He also highlighted his commitment to building sports academies, training centers, and mentorship programs through the Asamoah Gyan Foundation, the Moah Green Foundation, and the All-Regional Games.

“Sports saved me and gave me purpose. Its power goes beyond winning or losing—it’s about overcoming setbacks, pushing through challenges, and believing in dreams. I want every young person, no matter their background, to have that same opportunity to realize their greatness,” he added.
