Nollywood actress Ini Edo has lost a major legal battle over the ownership of the popular Netflix series, ‘Shanty Town’.
The Nigerian Trademark Registry and the Nigerian Copyright Commission have ruled in favor of filmmaker Chineye ‘Chi Chi’ Nworah and her company, GCM Giant Creative Media Limited.
Ini Edo and her production company, Minnie Empire Productions Limited (MEP), had been fighting to claim ownership of the series’ trademarks and copyrights. Their legal efforts have now been rejected.

On January 10, 2024, the Nigerian Trademark Registry turned down Ini Edo and MEP’s request concerning the trademarks ‘Scar’ (NG/TM/O/2023/121745) and ‘Shanty Town’ (NG/TM/O/2023/97482). The Registry found their petition to be without merit and confirmed that Nworah holds the exclusive rights to these trademarks.
Later, on July 24, 2024, the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) dismissed another petition from Ini Edo and MEP.
This petition sought to cancel two copyright certificates issued to Chinenye Nworah for the literary work “Shanty Town” (Certificate Number LW10177) and the audiovisual work “Shanty Town” (Certificate Number CF1448). The NCC upheld the validity of these certificates, affirming Nworah’s ownership.
Olisa Agbakoba Legal, representing Nworah and GCM Giant Creative Media Limited, played a key role in these legal victories.
Released on January 20, 2023, ‘Shanty Town’ is a six-part crime thriller that has become very popular.
The series features a star-studded cast, including Chidi Mokeme, Ini Edo, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Nse Ikpe-Etim, Sola Sobowale, Nancy Isime, Shaffy Bello, and Ali Nuhu.
