“I completely reject it,” Akufo-Addo stated about Nkrumah being the founder of Ghana

President Akufo-Addo has firmly rejected the idea that Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is the sole founder of Ghana.

In his Founders’ Day address delivered on Saturday, August 3, 2024, the President expressed his strong disagreement with the notion that Nkrumah alone was responsible for Ghana’s path to independence.

During his speech, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of recognizing the collective effort behind Ghana’s struggle for freedom.

While he acknowledged the significant role that Kwame Nkrumah played in the independence movement, he made it clear that Ghana’s liberation was not the result of one individual’s efforts but rather a shared struggle involving many people across different generations.

President Akufo-Addo enumerated some persons whom he believes were integral in the fight towards independence and deserve to be celebrated alongside Kwame Nkrumah.

“The formation of the Aborigines Rights Protection Society, the British West African National Congress, the United Gold Coast Convention, the work of countless unsung heroes, and the tenacious spirit of our people all played vital parts in bringing us to freedom and independence.

“Kwame Nkrumah, with his charismatic and visionary leadership, was undoubtedly a major actor in the final lap of our journey to independence. That is why, despite the several unfortunate things that happened after independence under his watch, Parliament in 2019 decided to memorialize his date of birth as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day, the only Ghanaian so far to be so honored in our history.”

In 2019, Parliament passed a law establishing August 4 as Founders’ Day to honour the contributions of all who played a role in Ghana’s journey to independence.

This law also designated September 21 as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day to specifically acknowledge Nkrumah’s contributions.

The decision to create Founders’ Day sparked protests from some individuals and groups who believed in Nkrumah’s singular role in founding the country.

These critics argue that Nkrumah’s leadership was pivotal and deserving of sole recognition.
