Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the upcoming 2024 election, has issued an apology for comparing the achievements of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, to those of the current President, Akufo-Addo.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh usually referred to as NAPO in statement on July 12 said his comment were not meant to denigrate the former President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

“I wish to emphasise that I never meant to disrespect our former President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah or any of our former heads of state, including my own grand uncle and mentor, Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor,” his statement said.
The former Energy Minister added that he’s noted the concerns raised after his statement and “regret any discomfort caused.”
His apology comes after a section of Ghanaians criticised him for claiming that President Akufo-Addo has outperformed all his predecessors since Ghana’s independence including Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
During his official unveiling in Kumasi on July, 9, Dr. Opoku Prempeh said that “Since independence in 1957, we’ve not had any president who has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. From 1957 till today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumah… no president has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.”
These remarks have drawn criticism prompting the Convention People’s Party (CPP) to call for Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s resignation.
This apology comes after he had defended the comments despite public condemnation.
