Early life
Born John Golden Richards on December 31, 1950 in Utah and attended Granite High School, where he excelled in football, basketball, and track & field.
He was recruited by several universities and chose to attend Brigham Young University (BYU) due to the influence of his church bishop.
While at BYU, Richards set multiple records and received All-WAC honors. He transferred to the University of Hawaii for his senior season and had a successful season before injuring his knee.
Professional career
In 1973, the Dallas Cowboys drafted Richards as the 46th overall pick. He played mostly on special teams during his rookie season, but in the NFC Championship game, he returned a punt for a touchdown.
Richards became the starter at wide receiver in 1974 and had his best statistical year with 26 receptions for 467 yards and five touchdowns. He played with the Cowboys for four seasons before being traded to the Chicago Bears in 1978.
Richards suffered a knee injury in 1979 and was placed on the injured reserve list, and later signed with the Denver Broncos in 1980, but retired without playing a regular season game for the Broncos.

Golden Richards died from congestive heart failure on February 23, 2024, at the age of 73.

“My uncle Golden passed away peacefully this morning,” Lance Richards wrote. “I will forever remember going hunting and talking Dallas Cowboy football. He was a kind and sweet soul and I’m so happy he’s not suffering anymore.”
