Toby Keith, a hit country crafter of pro-American anthems who both riled up critics and was loved by millions of fans, has died at age 62.
Keith died on February 5, according to a statement on X. The cause of death was stomach cancer, which he had battled since fall of 2021.
“Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on February 5, surrounded by his family. He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time,” the statement read. His real name was Toby Keith Covel.

Toby Keith was married to Tricia Lucus, whom he met in 1981 at an Oklahoma nightclub.
After graduating from high school in 1979, Keith took a job as an oil field worker, just like his father, doing “typical roughneck stuff” and making $50,000 per year.
Keith also played and sang at local bars with his band called the Easy Money Band, which performed Alabama-style country-rock when he wasn’t working. It was during this time that he met Lucus, who was working as an oil company secretary at the time.
The couple dated for three years before they decided to get married in 1984.

“She’s been a trouper. She’s the best nurse,” the “Red Solo Cup” hitmaker told News 9’s Robin Marsh in a one-on-one interview. “The first time we went to Houston, to the hospital, she stepped right in and she just took control and said, ‘We got this. Let’s go.'”
Keith added: “So she’s like, ‘We’re going to get this and don’t worry about it.'”
He was diagnosed with stomach cancer in the fall of 2021, before he revealed the news in June 2022.
At the time, the country icon said he’d already received six months of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.
