Who was Brianna Ghey?

Brianna Ghey was a 16-year-old transgender girl and a Year 11 pupil at Birchwood Community High School. Her parents described her as “a larger-than-life character who would leave a lasting impression on all that met her”.

According to her friends, Ghey would often help younger trans girls safely and legally access hormone replacement therapy.

They also said she had faced years of transphobic harassment and bullying before she was killed, including at school, a part of which was being repeatedly “gang beaten”.

Birchwood’s headteacher said that “I spoke again to Brianna’s mum who confirmed that Brianna was not bullied at Birchwood and always felt well supported by the school and she gave me permission to share this with you all”.

In addition to being a student, Ghey was also a TikToker under the username @gingerpuppyx, with her number of followers variously reported as 63,000.

On TikTok, she was known for miming and dancing to popular songs. One of her final TikToks said that she was “excluded from school”. After her death, her TikTok account was deleted.

The 16-year-old’s family described her as ”a much loved daughter, granddaughter, and baby sister”.

In a statement, her loved ones added: ”She was a larger than life character who would leave a lasting impression on all that met her.

“Brianna was beautiful, witty and hilarious. Brianna was strong, fearless and one of a kind.”

What happened to Brianna Ghey?

On February 11, 2023, emergency services rushed to Linear Park in Culcheth, Warrington after Brianna’s body was discovered.

Police received calls that the teen had been found with serious injuries and raced to the popular park around 3pm.

Tragically Brianna was pronounced dead at the scene. A murder investigation was quickly launched into what police described as a “targeted attack”.

Earlier Detective Chief Supt Mike Evans of Cheshire Police described it as a “targeted attack” on Brianna during a “busy day” at the park.

He added: “This is a truly awful attack on a 16-year-old girl, who has sadly lost her very short life.”

Who has paid tribute to Brianna Ghey?

Brianna’s mum Esther Ghey called Brianna “funny, witty and fearless” as she revealed how her daughter was “larger than life”.

Esther continued: “We miss Brianna so much and our house feels empty without her laughter.

“To know how scared my usually fearless child must have been when she was alone in that park with someone that she called her friend will haunt me forever.”

Brave Esther is now focusing her grief into something positive as she launches a “mindfulness” campaign.

The mum has already raised tens of thousands to teach compassion and empathy in schools in the hope of avoiding what happened to her daughter.

She has already started delivering assemblies in schools in the North West.

Esther told ITV News: “The crime that was inflicted on Brianna is not a one off. Senseless acts of violence are happening far too often.

“I believe to prevent this from reoccurring we need to weave empathy, compassion, and resilience throughout our society.”

Brianna’s headteacher also remembered the teenager as “loud and proud and confident”.

Speaking to the BBC, Emma Mills said: “There was never any evidence of Brianna being bullied within school or out of school.

“Brianna was very much able to give as good as she got in that way.

“And I think what was really hard was that she was portrayed in the media as a victim and she didn’t live her life as a victim.

“She was someone that was loud and proud and confident in who she was.”
