Orlando Pirates have confirmed the tragic passing of former captain and club legend Papi Khomane.
Khomane, who is also a former Bafana Bafana defender died on 25 November 2023 at age 48.
Papi Khomane Cause of death
Papi Khomane was killed in a car crash while travelling to Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, on 25 November 2023.
Papi’s father, Johannes ‘Yster’ Khomane disclosed that Papi’s mother, Rita Khomane, and another passenger also died when the accident happened.
They were scheduled to attend a funeral in the third-largest city in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, Newcastle.
“Orlando Pirates Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing away of former captain Khomane,” a club statement read.
“The Club was informed by his father and another Bucs legend, Yster Khomane who confirmed that both his son and his wife Mrs Rita Khomane were involved in a motor vehicle accident today.
“Papi was a man of few words, but his presence on the pitch spoke volumes. His transformation from a quiet individual into a formidable leader during games was nothing short of inspirational.”
Career
Club career: He played for two South African clubs, Jomo Cosmos and Orlando Pirates.
He won the Premier Soccer League title with Orlando Pirates in 2001 and 2003.
International career: He represented the South African national team from 1998 to 2000.
He earned nine caps and scored one goal. He was part of the squad that participated in the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France.
Retirement: He retired from professional football in 2004 at the age of 29.
He later became a coach and a football analyst. He also runs a football academy for young players in his hometown of Soweto.

Father: Khomane was the son of Pirates legend Johannes ‘Yster’ Khomane, who also represented the club with distinction.
