Ted Hopkins, the former Carlton footballer best known for his role in the biggest and most famous comeback in VFL/AFL grand final history, has died aged 74.
Carlton confirmed on Tuesday that Hopkins, a member of the club’s famed 1970 premiership team, coached by the great Ron Barassi, had died.
Who was Ted Hopkins?
Ted Hopkins was born on 27 May 1949 in Melbourne, Australia. He attended Melbourne High School and played junior football for the South Melbourne Districts.
He was recruited by Carlton Football Club in 1967 and made his senior debut in 1968. He played as a rover and a forward and was known for his speed and agility.
He was part of Carlton’s premiership team in 1970, when he came off the bench at half-time and kicked four goals to help his team overcome a 44-point deficit against Collingwood.
He retired from football in 1972 after playing 29 games and kicking 46 goals.
He then pursued a career in business and writing, becoming a successful entrepreneur and author of several books.
