Peter Seidler was born in Alhambra, California, on November 7, 1960.

He was the grandson of Walter O’Malley and nephew of Peter O’Malley, who had owned the Brooklyn / Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball (MLB).

He earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Virginia and a Master of Business Administration from the University of California, Los Angeles.

While at Virginia, he joined Delta Upsilon Fraternity.

Seidler founded a private equity firm, Seidler Equity Partners in Marina del Rey, California, in 1992. He was the managing partner.

The firm had an estimated $1.8 billion in assets under management in 2020 and $3.5 billion in 2023.

In 2012, Seidler, his uncle Peter, and Ron Fowler formed the O’Malley Group, which purchased MLB’s San Diego Padres from John Moores.

On November 18, 2020, MLB approved the transfer of the role of chairman from Fowler to Seidler, who purchased part of Fowler’s stake in the team to become the largest stakeholder.

Seidler increased the Padres’ payroll to $214 million for the 2022 season, which was the sixth-highest in MLB.

The Padres reached the 2022 National League Championship Series. The Padres payroll increased to $237 million for the 2023 MLB season, the third-highest in MLB.

He authorized the acquisitions and contract extensions to star players, including Xander Bogaerts, Yu Darvish, Manny Machado, Fernando Tatís Jr., Juan Soto, Josh Hader, and Joe Musgrove.

San Diego Padres owner and chairman Peter Seidler died on November 14, 2023, at the age of 63.

The Padres announced the heartbreaking news via X (formerly Twitter) this afternoon as the team wrote: “With profound sadness, the Padres announce that their Chairman and Owner Peter Seidler passed away today in San Diego. He will be dearly missed.”

Tributes have flooded in from the MLB world as Alex Rodriguez shared on X (formerly known as Twitter): “Peter Seidler cared so deeply about his family, his community, and Major League Baseball.

“His giving knew no limits, and he did everything he could to bring San Diego the championship it so richly deserves. He did everything first class at all times and treated everyone with utmost respect.”

The star concluded: “He will be missed in so many ways by so many people. He was always upbeat and wanted nothing more than to bring a World Series title to San Diego.”

MLB Commissioner of Baseball Robert D. Manfred Jr. also put out a statement, sharing in part about the icon: “He was an enthusiastic supporter of using the Padres and Major League Baseball to bring people together and help others.”

Seidler’s family requested that the cause of death remain private at this time.
